About Us

Both owners Bernadette MacNeil and husband Lance Nachoff come by their love of food honestly. Bernadette’s grandfather Angus owned three delicatessens/butcher shops in downtown Toronto in the 1930’s to 1960’s. Bernadette has over 25 years experience in the culinary & hospitality industry, with stops in Toronto, Peterborough and Whitby. When not in the kitchen crafting gourmet spins on classic dishes, Bernadette’s other passions include drawing & painting, interior design, gardening & nature, and spending time with her beloved little dogs.

I have always wanted to open a store that had all the beautiful things I like both locally and from around the world, and incorporate something everyone loves, delicious food. Understanding the importance of supporting local producers and limiting the global footprint it was decided that a traditional mercantile business would encompass all of these objectives. A store that has a little something for everyone, with an emphasis on locally sourced, small batch, artisanal products.

While Lance’s grandfather Michael owned and operated a diner across the street from old Maple Leaf Gardens in the 1930’s to 1960’s. Lance has worked throughout all aspects of the Toronto food industry, from fine dining and oyster bars, to tapas and traditional pubs. Lance’s love of wine, cheese and fresh seafood can be seen throughout the store. Bernadette and Lance and their staff love nothing more than designing that next great charcuterie platter.

This culmination of experience has blossomed into the creation of the Mercantile. From gourmet homemade & prepared foods, charcuterie and fresh seafood, to home décor, fashion, jewelry, and beauty & wellness products the Merc has something for everyone.

If we can’t find it locally then Bernadette scours the globe in search of eclectic and creative items that are sure to please.
